The next Xbox in the sequence of Microsoft’s offerings to the console market will be the Xbox Series X, which is only a marginally better name than Project Scarlett.
According to Phil Spencer, the Head of Xbox at Microsoft, it will be the fastest, most powerful console to date released by the company. It will deliver four times the processing power of the Xbox One X and it appears to be built out of what looks like a small computer chassis that can be set either vertically or horizontally.
“Xbox Series X will be our fastest, most powerful console ever and set a new bar for performance, speed and compatibility, allowing you to bring your gaming legacy, thousands of games from three generations and more forward with you,” said Spencer, speaking about the Xbox Series X.
It will be shipped with a custom-built AMD processor, high bandwidth GDDR6 memory, and a next-gen solid state drive.
“Its industrial design enables us to deliver four times the processing power of Xbox One X in the most quiet and efficient way, something that is critically important in delivering truly immersive gameplay,” Spencer added.
Alongside the new Xbox Series X, Microsoft also unveiled the new wireless controller. Accordingly, it has been reshaped to better fit a wider range of hand people’s hand sizes and it will also feature a dedicated Share button for capturing screenshots and game clips simple. It also features a hybrid D-pad inspired by the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2.
The new Xbox Controller will also be compatible with Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs.
An important part of the expected release of the Xbox Series X will be to bring developers on board with the capability of providing 4K at 60FPS, with the support for 120FPS, Variable Refresh Rate, and 8K capability.
The custom-built AMD processor uses the latest in RDNA architecture and will use hardware acceleration to produce ray tracing at a new level of performance never before seen on a console. Patented Variable Rate Shading technology will allow developers to get even more out of the Xbox Series X GPU and combined with the next-gen SSD should help greatly lower load times in games.
The Xbox Series X is expected to ship sometime in 2020 during the holiday season.
