Figures made of molten orange crystals rush at you and explode into glittering flinders when punched or shot. They stand out from the featureless white virtual environment as they charge – and ultimately detonate – but they only move when you move in the strategic first-person shooter Superhot.
Originally launched for PC and consoles in 2016, Superhot got a VR version in 2017 for the most popular consumer headsets including Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and PlayStation VR.
Sunday, Callum Underwood, director of special projects at Superhot, announced in a tweet that the VR game had raised $2 million in sales over 7 days across all platforms.
This means that the game grossed $2 million over the winter holiday between December 22 and December 29. This is the prime period for holiday spending and reveals exactly how popular VR games are running right now – one could say that VR spending is hot, potentially “superhot.”
According to market analyst website Statista, the VR gaming market is estimated to be worth 15.1 billion in 2019 and is expected to exceed 22.9 billion by the end of 2020.
Adventure, action, and simulation games appear to be the most popular VR gaming genres with more than 50 percent of gamers stating that they were interested in such games in late 2016. Fitting this analysis, first-person shooters tend to dominate the VR market including such titles as zombie-shooter Arizona Sunshine and Robo Recall.
Superhot also made VR Today Magazine’s top 25 VR shooters for 2019 amidst many other popular sellers in the genre.
