February 4th saw the interesting 2D MMORPG free-to-play game Realm of the Mad God go offline because of a security breach. The breach was so significant that the proprietor felt the need to update players not to respond to or deliver personal information to e-mails from Support.
That was a week ago.
Since then NullBot has been doing an awesome job keeping people updated in this thread on the Kabam forums about the status of RotMG.
On February 6th, SGT_Sunshine published an official statement regarding the security breach and the status of support accounts, and noted that players with Kabam forum access would need to change their passwords:
On or about February 6, 2014, our servers detected a security breach in connection with the customer support database for the forums accessed through the Kabam.com site at community.kabam.com. We have eliminated the vulnerability that led to the breach and the site and database are now secure. If you have ever submitted a support request through blog.wildshadow.com/support (support@wildshadow.com), your account username, your email address, and your IP address were necessarily included in this database and accessible to the individual(s) who breached the database.
The latest update has come to players today, waiting to see when the game will return but no ETA is to be had as of yet:
UPDATE #8 :: February 11th 3:04 PM Pacific Time
Greetings Realmers,
This update will be quite brief. We still do not have an ETA for the game to come back up. We will not be sharing any specific details about our processes for security reasons.
However, you may have recently received an email from us regarding the security breach. Please do not be alarmed, this is the same information we have posted yesterday – we emailed it out to reach as many people as possible.
Please check back for updates about the game and the upcoming Player Appreciation campaign!
In the meantime visitors to the RotMG website are redirected to the thread already posted above. News is thin on the ground due to the nature of the security fixes and the investigation into the breach.
RotMG is not built and run by a triple-A gaming outfit, it has always seemed to the gaming community a labor of love and affection. As a 2D game RotMG is amusing, quirky, and has a cult attendance with its audience.
The voces will update you should there be any breaks in this story.
