Everyone loves Portal. Everyone also loves that handy portal gun. Wouldn’t it be cool to throw space-warping wormholes everywhere? Out on the gizmo scene, the real trick has been making an accurate copy of the portal gun for everyday costume geekery. That problem has been solved by using a 3D printer to print out the gun directly from the game’s own model files. Can’t get much more accurate than that. Boing Boing has the story.
That’s one way to make a neat gun. It does help to show off the power of 3D printing, though, especially when it comes to making figures and copies of stuff in video games. There’s a lot of money in that market, and sooner or later, companies are going to start fighting back.
In the meantime, it’s another step toward the future.
