John Carmack of id Software is perhaps the most skilled programmer of our generation, and now he’s set his sights on virtual reality. Using Doom 3 as a base, he’s been working to create a new wave of virtual reality systems, including a new head-mounted display. So what has he been working on, what does it do, and when will you be able to get your hands on it? The Verge has the story.
Goggles and helmets will never catch on because they are not cool. What virtual reality needs is a totally cool helmet design that looks straight-up aggressive and military. It doesn’t need goggles, it needs a faceplate than slides down and locks into place with a satisfying clunk. If you don’t look like a fighter pilot about to make his attack run, it’s doing it wrong.
