The casuals are coming to get us. EA Sports FIFA 12, a game about grown men kicking a ball, has pulled down 3.2 million sales in its first week, compared to Gears of War’s own 3 million. Kotaku has the story.

Not that there’s anything wrong with casuals. Sometimes, I do think games are trending too far toward the hardcore and cutting out most of their potential market. Take, oh, that Warhammer MMO that’s all PVP all the time. Ain’t doing so well. Maybe a lighter casual game could have saved it.
But seriously, man, soccer?
Not unexpected.
Sports have a gigantic playerbase, which is extremely loyal. I cannot say that I understand the draw of sports games — except maybe the Fantasy Football and Baseball which are all about promoting a sense of managing the world — but simulators seem a bit less entertaining to me.
