Geeks love swords. Geek authors love swords. Video games, however, treat swordfighting as something between swinging a 2×4 and casting spells through a yard-long metal wand. Author Neal Stephenson wants to change that with a video game based around the complex art of real swordplay. Using motion control systems on the market today, his game idea, called CLANG, seeks to revolutionize the sword game. He’s got a kickstarter, with video. Kickstarter has the story.
While the idea of a fully-realistic sword game seems a little focused, the work could be useful in other areas. The important thing here is more developing a language for motion controlled actions, in this case used for sword fighting, which could be adapted to a wide range of actions and activities in other games.
