Starcraft 2 shipped without LAN support, forcing all games to go through Blizzard’s Battle.net service. In addition, the legalese on the game mandates that any tournaments go through Battle.net. In effect, the game is tied to the internet, doubly so for pro events. So what happens when the internet connection goes down during a pro match? Kotaku has the story.
Kind of hard to run a pro game when you can’t secure the connection, and by forcing the link to Battle.net, Blizzard has made it impossible to keep the game locked in. Expect to see more of this in the future, or the pro circuit abandoning Starcraft 2 for the old Starcraft with reliable LAN support.
