Back in the day, the Game Genie was king. It was a device you could plug into your game console that gave you access to a video game’s internal code. The end result was you could put in special codes and change the game. Infinite lives? Sure. All enemies are chickens? Why not. In our offline, single-player world the Game Genie could turn old, boring games into something new and exciting. Now, the Game Genie is back for the PlayStation 3, and it’s an online world. While the company claims to have removed any codes that can affect online play, gamers are clever beasts. There’s also the matter of Sony’s response. Game Politics has the story.
It’s almost certain Sony will try to shut out this new Game Genie, probably with a legal challenge on top. Something about being able to break DRM, no doubt. The real question is what PlayStation 3 functionality they’ll destroy in the process.
