We live in an era where cross-platform gaming can be a real thing, we have numerous MMOs that successfully bridge the gap between the personal computer OSes (Macintosh and Windows) such as World of Warcraft—but we have yet to see consoles and PCs hook up. In the case of Borderlands 2 players who bought the game for Mac could play alongside PC players on Pandora.
That is, they could until recently as reported by Aspyr Media:
The Borderlands 2 update released on June 26, 2013 for the PC will cause an out of sync with the Mac version of the game. We are working tirelessly to ensure the Mac version is caught up with the PC with this new update, but please be aware that the Mac and PC versions will be out of sync for a very short time, disabling cross platform play. We hope to be back in sync as soon as possible. Any questions please contact us at http://support.aspyr.com and log a ticket for one of our agents!
For this reporter this “out of sync” issue wasn’t discovered until June 27th and it took over an hour to discover what was wrong. No error string appears in Borderlands 2, no crash, it just fails to connect to host every time a PC and a Mac attempt to connect.
This problem persists today.
The inability to suddenly play cross-platform is only exacerbated by the fact that the newest DLC, Tiny Tiny’s Assault on Dragon Keep, came out this week. This means that Mac players interested in hooking up with the Borderlands 2 community can only play with other Mac players. The PC player base far outstrips the Mac player base and this greatly restricts Mac players ability to find games they can play in because those Mac players with the DLC is an even smaller group.
We will try to update this post when Aspyr Media completes and uploads their patch and Mac players can be bosom buddies with the Firehawk and PC players once again.
UPDATE July 24th, 2013: According to Aspyr Media, by now the version of Borderlands 2 on Mac Steam should be updated to work with PC. We haven’t tested it yet, however.
