One of the reveals at QuakeCon 2012 was a new version of the lamented Doom 3, and this time the folks at id have done things right. The biggest problem with Doom 3 was lighting. The graphics and game design were great, but you couldn’t see any of it. You had a flashlight, but couldn’t wield it and your gun at the same time. That’s changed. Doom 3: BFG Edition has been remade into something more of an action shooter with better lighting, more ammo, and a gun-mounted flashlight. Check out this article for a hands-on review of the new game. 1UP has the story.
Doom 3 suffered from some baffling design decisions, like the tons of monster closets, the infinite blackness of rooms without light, and a certain lack of visiting the lava-filled vacation resort that is id’s trademark vision of Hell. Everyone loves toting a shotgun and plasma rifle into Hell, right? Fortunately, the BFG Edition seems to have corrected these flaws.
Only took a few years.
