Yesterday, Slashdot linked to my Age of Conan: How a MMORPG Dies article as part of a roundup news clip on the state of the Age of Conan union. Six-thousand hits later, it’s come to my attention that not everyone agrees with that post-mortem of the game. In fact, some of you think the game has alot to offer, even if it came running off the starting line like a special olympics hopeful dressed up in Jesse Owens’s track suit. I’m told that quite a bit of progress has been made in patching the bugs that plague the game and with the server merges, players will one again be able to work together in ways that don’t involve a slow, wary dance with knives out.
I must admit, my discussion of Age of Conan was based on the game that shipped at release, not the one that exists now, since I was concerned mostly with how Funcom managed to shed half their subscriber base once the first billing month ran out. And you’re right, there are some good things that are unique to the game, and I would be remiss in my duties as a blood-sucking leech on the game industry’s jugular if I didn’t share the details of a particularly savory vein.
So in that spirit, I would like to show you the best features in Age of Conan, starting with —
( TBagUFace appears from goddamn nowhere! )
( TBagUFace has ganked your ass for 6967 damage! )
( You have died. )
( TBagUFace kneels deferentially. )
( TBagUFace kneels deferentially. )

You’re a moron for basing a current article on a the state of the game 4-6 months ago. You clearly had an agenda before writing the story.
“You’re a moron for basing a current article on a the state of the game 4-6 months ago. You clearly had an agenda before writing the story.”
Does it not make sense that he had an opinion on the game before writing an article about it? Moron.
I was not around when the US Civil War happened. Those that mean I can’t have any opinions on how Lee conducted the war?
I’m one of the people who bought on first day, and didn’t buy any more time one the first 30 day were up. Yes there were a lot of good things about AoC. After 30 days, I had seen most of them. Face it, the game was released several months early, and I did not want to pay to be their beta tester.
If the game is good now, well fine. Give me access to my characters for free for 14 days, and I’ll give AoC another shot. But I’m not paying for what I saw at release, it was unfinished. I, and many others, left for a reason, and blaming bad reviews will not bring us back.
The Civil war is not still going on..and Lee is dead..Hence a conclusion can be made. AoC is still going on, and “Lee” was fired and replaced with a competent, and proven leader.
Your comparison is garbage, but to at least be a little more accurate, it would have been like writing a retrospective on the civil war, after only reading about the first few battles…IE you most likely would have written that the South has won…and you would have been laughed out of the historic community.
Anyone who writes such a scathing review of anything, 7 months after launch, who hasn’t even looked at the game in 6 months has two things going. One-the media he writes for has serious credibility problems, and TWO- the author has serious credibility issues as well.
This is sad. Like, shaking my head as I’m reading it sad. The original article had some decent points about a deeply flawed game, but it didn’t really expound on them very much. This, on the other hand, is just standard issue whining. Getting ganked does not make a game bad – though it can mean it’s not for someone with your tastes.
Well,
It seems that you agree with my critique of your original article.
That the real issue is not any of the game “flaws” you erroneously reported but that it has devolved into a hard core PVP gank fest.
I don’t disagree. To find out why it REALLY happened though, try reading my blog on the subject.
(And yes folks, I was level 57 when I quit.)

P.S. Attacking your readers makes you a poor writer. They disagree with you. get over it or stop writing.
Fail again since most people, I’d say 90%, don’t even teabag. The game has done near a complete 180 since launch.
Thanks for more opinion from the guy “Who never played the game” (end quote).
This site is ridiculous. The author is getting linked to from other reputable sites about an opinion piece he wrote about a game he never even played.I’m removing this bs site from my bookmarks after I post this. The author is trying to get some kind of cred as…what, a game journalist? But he doesn’t play the games he writes about..
Might as well be submitting reviews of the new BMW over at Car and Driver too after just reading other people’s reviews and looking at the pictures.
What a joke.
I think your follow up article definately points out your complete lack of knowlege in this case. I’m not real sure whether you are just buddies with someone at Vox or if their standards are just completely non-existant when it comes to who is going to write for them. Either way, you are completely uninformed and ignorant excuse for a writer.
Nah, that’s completely inaccurate. No one in their right mind would “kneel deferentially” more than once: they might get ganked while locked in an emote.
On a more serious note, yes, some classes can still one-shot others. Strangely enough, stealth types are not really in that category. It’s mostly healers (Tempests of Set) and mages (Nightfall Necromancers) who can do it. And Funcom will eventually nerf -those- classes into oblivion….
Lol, fanboy nubs. “Wah! Wah! The mean man insulted my crappy game.”
