Ah, “too big to fail,” a wonderful expression from the howling pits of our economic collapse. How does that term apply to video games, now that we’ve reached the days of 100-million dollar launches? How many sequels can the industry take before it decays into a sea of its own putrescence? G4 has the story.
You know the old trope about the kid getting a huge expensive toy for Christmas, pulling it out of the box, then playing for the next seven hours with the box? I’m starting to feel that way about video games. You have these huge, expensive blockbuster games slamming into the earth’s crust, their engines cooling from the atmosphere, and then you have smaller games given life by some two-person team in a fantastic garden amidst waterfalls and singing animals.
Here’s the thing; both are fun. Trenched = Fun. Mass Effect 2 = Fun. Which means, I gotta wonder. Is the industry spending itself to death? It’s a hell of a question, maybe we’re in the middle of discovering the answer now.
